Epilogue: No Regrets

Five years later

Yvette reorganized the bouquet as she knelt beside the cold gray slab of marble in the center plot of Cedar’s Rest Memorial gardens. It had been his plot since the day after her mother was interred. They’d always talked about having a family mausoleum but never got around to it…and now it was too late. Scott was buried beside his first love and would always be. It had been two years since he’d taken ill and three since his passing. After the first remission of his cancer, Yvette had hoped that she would have more time with him but once it returned on Christmas day, they were both positive it would be the disease that got him.

She ran her hand over the engravings and read them over and again in her head. Always on my mind, forever in my heart. Brett’s hand rested on her shoulder and she wiped away a tear as Autumn came to sit beside her. “You think Grandpa liked roses?” Autumn asked and placed a single orchid next to the grave beside the large vase.

“He was a boy, Autumn,” Austin replied, dropping dramatically at Yvette’s side. “And boys don’t like flowers.”

“That’s not true!” Autumn asserted. “Boys can like flowers! Can’t they, Mommy?”

S6: Chapter 03: Snail Mail

“Dustin are you ok? Why so quiet,” Yvette asked nudging him with the tip of her shoe. He looked over his shoulder towards her, his finger still twirling the flap of the envelope in his pocket.

“Yeah, Vette, I’m fine. Just thinking about something that’s all.”

S4: Chapter 02: Criminal Minds

“Special Agent Yvette Evans,” a raspy male’s voice croaked behind her the moment she set foot inside the federal building. Familiarity ripped through her as she adjusted her weight to her left foot and analyzed the tone directed towards her. It was smug as always, rich and inundated the small hallway they stood within. The man knew how to make his presence known that was certain.

S4: Chapter 01: A Father's Love

– August 12, 1993 –
“Higher Daddy! Higher!” Yvette giggled encouraging Ethan to push her with all his might. “I wanna touch the sky!”
“But Daddy’s little Angel came from Heaven, are you so sure you want to go back already?”
“I just want to fly!” She closed her eyes as she reached the top of the bar and raised her hands towards her side. Ethan smiled watching her soar and every time she came back down to him he aimed to push her higher.

S3: Chapter 03: Family Ties

Ryan waited outside of the school watching to see if Stefanie had intentions to show today. He worried more about her after their last conversation; she seemed defeated which broke his heart. He’d hate to think she’d given up because of her situation. His promise replayed in the back of his mind as she stepped off the bus and pushed her way through the crowd of teenagers to enter the building. He said a silent prayer and started up his engine to head back home.

S2: Chapter 10: Live and On Air

Vic pulled himself up from the floor and pulled out his cellphone. He quickly punched in Yvette’s number and waited.
…“Hello…?” Brett asked sounding a little groggy.
“They took them…they took my family.”
…“What? Who took them? What are you talking about…?”

S2: Chapter 09: The Price of Freedom

Vic hung his head heavy as he dragged his equipment into the garage and dropped onto his work bench. He hadn’t slept soundly for a week and now that he knew Yvette was alive, he didn’t expect that to change much. Now the focus would be on resolving the case and finding the person that placed the hit on her.
He was so lost in thought he hadn’t realized his son was standing beside him rambling on about the motorized car Kiara had thrown into the bathtub and ruined. He stopped talking for a minute and stared at his Daddy waiting for an answer to a question that went unheard.

S2: Chapter 07: La Cosa Nostra

They pulled up to a large mansion sitting atop the hill. “You know the people that live here?”

She shrugged, “I did. There’s no telling what I’d find there now.”
Three armed men walked out to the front and pulled them from the vehicle. “Call it intuition or my sixth sense, but somehow or another I knew I’d see you again, Vette,” a man dressed in black stepped from the ornately adorned doors of the home with a glass of wine in his hand. “Missed me?”

S1: Chapter 09: Conspiracy Therorists

It was another three months and instead of working on the case that could possibly be the arrest of a lifetime the team was placed on a new assignment that came straight from the top. Pamela Maxwell, the Chief of Staff was attacked shortly after a dinner with other law enforcement officials and Scott asked that this take priority to the other cases they were working on.
“Why would the Chief of Staff hire an escort anyway?” Ryan asked.
